Roster Set for 2011!

Springfield, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the Springfield Cardinals roster for the upcoming season.
Returning to the roster are 15 players who appeared in a Springfield uniform last year, including Texas League All-Stars Steven Hill and Aaron Luna and pitcher Nick Additon. Hill posted career highs in home runs (22) and RBI (86) and made his Major League Debut in August with the Cardinals going 1-for-3 with a homerun. Luna led the Texas-League and set a franchise record for on-base percentage (.426) and hit by pitches (25) while setting career highs in homers (15) and RBI (54). Additon was the lone mainstay in the Springfield rotation in 2010 going 9-6 with a 4.43 ERA and a team high 109 strikeouts in a team high 27 starts.
Several other familiar names will be at Hammons Field in 2011 as reliever Cory Rauschenberger returns to Springfield after not having pitched above High-A Palm Beach since 2008 and outfielder Tyler Henley, a Texas League All-Star in 2009, returns from Tommy John surgery.
Manning the infield are a trio of 22-year-old newcomers in 1st baseman Matt Adams, shortstop Ryan Jackson and 3rd baseman Niko Vasquez along with utility players Jose Garcia and Jermaine Curtis. Adams led the organization with a .310 batting average, finished 2nd in HR (22) and RBI (88) and skipped Palm Beach entirely to make his Springfield debut in 2011. Jackson, rated as the Best Defensive Infielder according to Baseball America, split 2010 between Quad Cities and Palm Beach. Vasquez, a former top prospect out of Las Vegas, set career highs in batting average, HR and RBI.
Tommy Pham and Chris Swauger return to Springfield after solid campaigns in 2010 and will be joined by newcomer Alex Castellanos in the Cardinals’ outfield. Castellanos spent all of 2010 in Palm Beach and led the Florida State League in Doubles (35) and extra base hits (55). Pham batted .339 in his 39 games with Springfield before breaking a bone in his arm in August ended his stellar season. Swauger split his season between Palm Beach and Springfield and combined to hit .280 with 9 HR and 48 RBI.
The starting staff will feature Nick Additon, Kevin Thomas (10-2, 2.27 ERA), Deryk Hooker (8-8, 2.99 ERA), Scott Schneider (8-9, 3.46 ERA) and Michael Blazek (8-5, 3.10 ERA). The bullpen sees the returns of lefty Ryan Kulik, and right handers Cory Rauschenberger, Ramon Delgado, Casey Mulligan and, former Missouri State Bears Closer, Matt Frevert. Richard Castillo and Brett Zawacki are the only members of the ‘pen that have not pitched in Springfield.
The team arrived on Monday and practiced Tuesday for their final tune up before they hit the road to start the season in Frisco against the RoughRiders Tonight! Scott Schneider is scheduled to pitch for the Cardinals against right hander Wilfredo Boscan of the RoughRiders. Springfield will open the 2011 home schedule next Thursday, April 14th, as they take on the Frisco RoughRiders at Hammons Field. 5,000 fans will receive a Great Southern 2011 Magnet Schedule/Picture Frames, the first of 11 “Buck a Brat” $1 Johnson Bratwurst nights and everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Spectacular thanks to AM Pyrotechnics. Opening Night will also feature Hall of Famer Steve Carlton.
